The mysteries of Johny Johny

The original version of Johny Johny was nursery rhyme. Even then it was popular with numerous views on the video but just from a very different audience than the one it gained traction with more recently.

If you don't know what meme I'm talking about you can have a minute to watch it:

Usually it could be said that it is very hard to determine why a meme gains recognition since there is such surplus of content on the web these days and the memes that become most known seem to be chosen randomly. However, there are some aspects that definitely contributed to Johny Johny being regarded as a popular meme. The first point would be the fact that internet celebrities referenced the meme, exposing their audience to its existence who would then continue distributing it. One of these people is known as Dolan Dark, a youtube channel who is one of the biggest creator of memes and has a over a million subscribers in the present.

Furthermore, another reason that the masses may have taken a liking to it is that it creates a dissonance between what is usually expected of children' content, which would be something lighthearted and fun, and what is actually presented. Despite it being supposed to cater to younger audiences, the fact that it is made by bots and the character models look like... that give it an overall creepy vibe that is ironic and a mix of fun and disturbing to watch while trying to decipher why it is so popular in the midst of children.

Johny Johny not at all looking like he will steal your soul.

Social media, namely Facebook and youtube also are a big help when distributing memes, Youtube has been pretty much a meme factory lately and Facebook has the advantage of very large numbers of users to expose the memes to. However, they do have an older audience where if you try to be edgy you might not be very popular, in contrast, twitter welcomes that kind of content which may be why the meme Johny Johny and its variations were flooding the site for quite a long time. In fact, I became acquainted with the meme on twitter. Twitter also has the advantage of having a very easy way of creating memes as you can take a random image, put a caption on it and post it hoping that people will like it, so, you don't have to do any editing which can sometimes be annoying. Instagram just steals memes from other sites because people on there are boring.

Most of the times memes only have a lifespan of a couple of weeks, and Johny Johny had more potential due to its versatility and all the remixes that people made about it and posted on the internet, gaining as much popularity as the original version of the meme. Unfortunately, now it is dead and that is why I make this article, to commemorate a fallen soldier. Now Johny Johny can only continue living as an ironic reference in our hearts.
